Agentic commerce on Shopify: what store owners should do now
Shoppers can now buy through ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot and other assistants. What the Universal Commerce Protocol is, how Shopify connects your store, and a checklist to get ready.
A growing share of shoppers start with a question to an assistant rather than a search box: “find me a waterproof trail shoe under $150 that ships to Canada”. Over the past year Shopify has built the plumbing so those assistants can find your products, answer questions about them and complete the purchase. The industry calls it agentic commerce.
Here is what was announced, in plain words, and what we would do about it as a store owner.
The timeline in one minute
- December 2025, Winter ’26 Edition. Shopify introduced Agentic Storefronts: one place in the admin to manage how your products show up in assistants.
- January 11, 2026. Shopify and Google announced the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), an open standard for how assistants and stores talk to each other, backed by retailers such as Etsy, Target, Walmart and Wayfair.
- Spring ’26 Edition. Checkout inside Microsoft Copilot with Shop Pay, product data optimized for assistants, and an Agentic plan that lets brands without a Shopify online store list their products in Shopify Catalog.
- October 2026, Fall ’26 Edition. Connectors for nine assistants including ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, Google Gemini, Grok and Perplexity; shop.md, a shopping skill for assistants; Universal Checkout in the Shop app for carts from several stores; and a new Agentic page in the admin with a knowledge base for your store.
What the Universal Commerce Protocol actually does
UCP is a shared language. A store and an assistant each publish what they can do, for example search the catalog, build a cart, apply a discount or check out, and then agree on what both support. The purchase can be finished by the assistant, or handed back to the shopper on a checkout page. It works with any payment provider, not only Shopify Payments.
For a Shopify merchant, the important part is that Shopify implements the protocol for you. You do not need a developer to “add UCP” to your store. What you control is the information assistants receive, and whether your checkout rules hold up when someone other than your theme builds the cart.
Our take
We think this matters, and we also think it is easy to overreact. Most of your sales will come through your own storefront for a long time yet. But assistants are a new kind of shopper with two habits that matter:
- They read your data, not your design. A beautiful product page does not help if the product title is vague and the description is two lines of brand copy. Assistants compare facts: materials, sizes, compatibility, shipping times, return rules.
- They skip your theme. When an assistant builds a cart, your theme’s JavaScript never runs. Any rule that lives only in theme code, such as a minimum quantity, a “free gift over $100” or a block on shipping certain products to certain countries, simply does not exist for that order.
The second point is the one we see stores miss.
A checklist to get ready
Product data
- Write product titles that say what the product is: brand, type, key attribute. “Aurora 2 — Waterproof Trail Running Shoe” beats “Aurora 2”.
- Put real facts in descriptions: materials, dimensions, care, what is in the box.
- Fill in the Shopify product category, variants, barcodes (GTIN) where you have them, and metafields for attributes such as size, colour and material.
- Make sure every variant has its own image and price.
Store facts
- Open the new Agentic page under Sales channels in the admin, check which products are eligible for Shopify Catalog and why others are not.
- Fill in the knowledge base: shipping times by region, return window and conditions, sizing advice, warranty and anything shoppers often ask your support team.
- Keep your shipping and refund policies current. Assistants quote them.
Checkout rules
- List every rule your store enforces: minimums, limits, exclusions, gift rules, B2B terms.
- Move each rule that must always apply out of theme code and into Shopify Functions (discounts, delivery and payment customizations) or checkout validation. Shopify says Universal Checkout respects each store’s checkout extensions and validations, so rules that live there keep working, wherever the cart was built.
Measurement
- Track sales by channel in Shopify Analytics and note when orders from assistants start to appear, so you judge the effort by results before you invest more.
Where we can help
Most of this list is work your team can do. Where we help is the technical part: moving cart and checkout rules into Functions and validation, structuring product data with metafields and metaobjects, and checking that your theme, apps and checkout behave the same way when the order did not start on your storefront.
