Shopify Scripts are gone. How to rebuild them with Shopify Functions
Shopify Scripts stopped running on June 30, 2026. What that broke, how to find what you lost, and how we move discount, shipping and payment logic to Functions.
For years, Shopify Plus stores used Shopify Scripts, small Ruby programs, to change prices, shipping options and payment methods at checkout. That era is over. Shopify stopped allowing edits and new Scripts on April 15, 2026, and on June 30, 2026 every remaining Script stopped running.
If your store relied on Scripts and nobody moved the logic, something in your checkout is already behaving differently. This post explains what to look for, how to find exactly what you lost, and how the logic maps to Shopify Functions.
What may have quietly broken
Scripts did not fail loudly. They simply stopped, so the checkout fell back to Shopify’s default behaviour. Typical symptoms we see:
- Discounts are missing. Tiered pricing, “buy two, get the third at half price”, VIP pricing for tagged customers or free gifts no longer apply.
- Shipping looks wrong. Hidden or renamed shipping rates are back, or a free shipping rule for a customer group no longer applies.
- Every payment method shows. Cash on delivery appears for orders where you used to hide it, or a payment method is offered in a market where you did not want it.
If customers have written to say “the discount didn’t work”, check this first.
Find what you lost with the Scripts report
Shopify generates a Scripts customizations report for every store that had Scripts. In the admin, go to Apps → Script Editor and choose Replace Shopify Scripts. The report is split into three sections, Payment gateways, Shipping and Product discounts, and lists each script with suggested apps and Function tutorials. You can export it as a CSV, which is the best brief you can hand to a developer.
If you have the code of a script, paste it into our free Scripts to Functions checker. It lists what the script does in plain words and which Function replaces each part, right in your browser.
How each kind of Script maps to Functions
Shopify Functions are the replacement. They are small programs that run inside Shopify’s infrastructure during cart and checkout.
| Old Script | What it did | Shopify Function |
|---|---|---|
| Line item script | Changed prices and discounts on products | Discount function |
| Shipping script | Hid, renamed or reordered delivery options | Delivery customization |
| Payment script | Hid, renamed or reordered payment methods | Payment customization |
Functions can also do things Scripts never could, such as blocking checkout when a rule is broken through cart and checkout validation, so a migration is a good moment to add rules you used to enforce by hand.
App or custom code? It depends on your plan
This is the part that surprises people:
- Public apps from the Shopify App Store that use Functions work on every plan. If an existing app covers your case, that is usually the fastest and cheapest route.
- Custom apps that contain Functions only run on Shopify Plus. If your logic is unique, for example pricing based on data from your ERP, you need Plus and a custom app.
Shopify also notes that some Functions capabilities are Plus-only, so check the specific API before you plan.
Things to know before you rebuild
- Functions are fast and strict. They compile to WebAssembly and must finish in milliseconds. Shopify recommends Rust for logic that has to handle large carts; JavaScript works for simpler cases.
- Functions are not pasted into a store. They ship inside an app. That means version control, deploys and a proper test setup, which is a good thing for logic that touches revenue.
- Discount behaviour changed. Shopify now lets several product discounts stack, so look at how your new discounts combine with each other and with discount codes before launch.
How we approach a migration
- Read the report and talk to the people who use it. Scripts often contain rules nobody remembers. We list every rule in plain language and confirm which ones still matter.
- Choose app or custom per rule. We recommend an existing app where one fits and write custom Functions only where it pays off.
- Build and test on a development store with real product data and edge cases: empty carts, huge carts, mixed currencies, B2B customers.
- Launch with monitoring. We compare discount totals and shipping choices for the first days against what the old Scripts produced.
If you want this done for you, see our Shopify Functions and Scripts migration service. We work with Functions in our own products too: our app CartGift runs its BOGO, spend-tier and gift promotions on Shopify Functions.
