Shopify script tag checker

On March 1, 2027 Shopify stops loading script tags on every storefront, and apps that still use them stop working without a warning. Your admin doesn’t list which apps those are. Enter your store address and see them in a few seconds. Free, no sign-up, nothing to install.

We only read public storefront pages. Nothing to install, no admin access.

Which of your apps stop working?

Enter your Shopify store address. In a few seconds you will see:

  • Every app that still loads through script tags
  • Apps tied to your theme, which a theme change switches off
  • Code pasted into your theme, including old app leftovers
How it works

Every app, sorted by what happens to it

Shopify prints how each app loads into your storefront’s pages. The checker reads it for you.

01

We open your storefront

The checker loads your home page and one product page, the same pages any visitor sees.

02

We trace every app

Shopify writes script tags, app embeds and pixels into each page in different ways, so each app shows how it loads.

03

You see what changes

Which apps stop on March 1, 2027, which depend on your theme, and what to do about each one.

Questions about script tags

Read the full story in our post Shopify script tags stop on March 1, 2027.

What are Shopify script tags?

An older way for apps to add JavaScript to a store. The app registers a file with Shopify, and Shopify loads it on every storefront page without any change to your theme. Newer apps use app embeds instead, which you switch on in the theme editor.

What exactly happens on March 1, 2027?

Shopify stops adding script tags to storefront pages. Since October 1, 2026 apps can no longer create or update them. The app still shows as installed in your admin, but whatever it added to the store, like a reviews widget, a chat button or a loyalty panel, stops appearing. Shopify says this applies to every API version, so nothing can postpone it.

Why doesn’t Shopify tell me which apps are affected?

Each app developer gets a list of their own script tags, but the admin has no page that lists them for a store. Shopify planned a warning banner for merchants and then decided not to show it for now. The checker reads the list straight from your storefront, where Shopify prints it for the browser.

How do I fix an app on the list?

Update the app, or ask its developer when its app embed is ready, then switch the embed on under Online Store → Themes → Customize → App embeds and check that the feature works. If the developer has no plan, choose another app now rather than in February. If your team built the app itself, its code has to move into your theme or into a new app embed.

An app shows an app embed and a script tag. Is that a problem?

It usually means the developer has shipped the new version and the old script tag is still there. Until it is removed the app can load twice, which slows the page and can show a widget twice. Ask the developer to remove the script tag.

There is an app on the list we don’t recognize

Uninstalling an app removes its script tags, so each one belongs to an app that is still installed, often one added years ago or a custom app. Look under Settings → Apps for a matching name. The report shows the address each unknown app loads from to help you find it.

Why does the checker look at our theme too?

Because the fix for most apps is an app embed, and app embeds are switched on per theme. Code pasted into theme files stays with that theme as well. If you plan a new theme, both lists tell you what has to move with you.

Is the checker free?

Yes, with no sign-up and nothing to install. To keep it fast for everyone, each visitor can run 15 checks every 10 minutes.
