Shopify script tags stop on March 1, 2027. Which of your apps will break?
On March 1, 2027 Shopify stops loading script tags on storefronts, and apps that use them stop working without a warning. What breaks, who has to act, and what we found on 21 well-known stores.
On March 1, 2027 Shopify stops loading script tags on storefronts. Script tags are the oldest way for an app to add JavaScript to a store, and plenty of stores still depend on them: for reviews, loyalty panels, chat buttons, subscription widgets, fraud checks and affiliate tracking. When the date passes, those features will quietly stop appearing, while the apps still show as installed in your admin.
The hard part is that the admin has no page that lists which apps are affected. So we built one: the free Shopify script tag checker reads it straight from your storefront.
The dates
- October 1, 2026. Apps can no longer create or update script tags. Existing ones keep running.
- March 1, 2027. Shopify stops adding script tags to storefront pages. Shopify says the change applies to every API version, so an app cannot postpone it.
Script tags on the order status page already stopped on an earlier schedule. This change covers the storefront itself, the last place script tags still run.
What breaks, in plain words
A script tag is a file an app registered with Shopify, which Shopify then loads on every page of your store. After March 1 that file is simply not loaded. There is no error message for you or your customers. The reviews under a product, the loyalty button in the corner or the “notify me” form on a sold-out product just are not there anymore.
Some of the affected apps work where nobody looks. A fraud app that collects device data in the browser can keep screening orders, but with less information. An affiliate app stops recording which partner sent the sale, and you find out when the partner asks why their commissions dropped.
We checked 21 well-known Shopify stores
On October 30, 2026 we ran the checker on the home pages of 21 well-known Shopify brands, from apparel to coffee to cosmetics. We are not naming them; the point is how common this is.
- 20 of the 21 still load at least one app through script tags. The median store has 4, and one has 14.
- 112 script tags in total. The most common jobs: SMS marketing on 8 stores, affiliate tracking on 7, fraud protection on 6, cross-border selling, reviews and subscriptions on 5 each.
- On 11 stores, at least one app already has its new app embed switched on while its old script tag still loads, so the same app can load twice.
- On 2 stores, the exact same script tag loads twice on every page.
These are large brands with development teams. Smaller stores, with apps installed years ago and nobody watching them, may be in a worse spot.
Who has to do what
App developers move their storefront code to an app embed in a theme app extension, or to a web pixel if the app only tracks events. Then they remove the old script tag. On the stores we checked, many apps had already shipped their app embeds.
Store owners have four jobs:
- Find out which apps use script tags. Run the checker on your store. It lists each app, what it does and whether its new version is already on.
- Update the apps and switch on their app embeds. App embeds live under Online Store → Themes → Customize → App embeds. Unlike script tags, they are switched on per theme, so do it in your live theme, and again in any theme you publish later.
- Replace apps that have no plan. If a developer cannot give you a date, choose another app in December, not in late February.
- Move custom code. If your team built an app for your store only, its script tag code has to move into your theme or into a proper app embed.
A plan for the months left
- November: run the checker and list every affected app with its owner on your side.
- December: ask each developer for their app embed date. Pick replacements for the apps without one.
- January: switch on the new app embeds, test them on a preview of your theme, and ask developers to remove the old script tags so nothing loads twice.
- February: run the checker again. The list should be empty.
- March 1: click through your store: home, a product, the cart, your account pages.
Changing themes at the same time?
Many stores plan a redesign this winter. Keep in mind that app embeds and app blocks are tied to a theme, and code pasted into theme files stays with the old theme. The checker lists both, so you know what has to come along to the new theme. If you are weighing a new look, you can also see your own store in Mars, our 3D theme.
Where we can help
For most stores this is a list of emails to app developers and an afternoon in the theme editor. Where we help is the rest: moving custom app code to app embeds and web pixels, replacing apps that will not make it, and testing it all on a preview theme before March. Tell us about your store and send the checker’s report along.
